New Directions: Colonial Legacies, Post-Colonial Perspectives

Colonial legacies continue to shape political, social, and intellectual life. While colonialism is often treated as a historical period, its structures and logics persist in contemporary debates around race, territory, knowledge, and power. This panel — part of the Social Science Matrix New Directions series — will bring together UC Berkeley graduate students from anthropology, geography, and sociology to examine how colonial histories are reproduced, contested, and reimagined across different contexts.

Economy and Society Initiative to Launch at UC Berkeley

UC Berkeley is launching a new research center dedicated to political economy, a cross-disciplinary field focused on the interplay of markets and government. Funded through a generous seed grant from the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, the Berkeley Economy and Society Initiative (BESI) will be housed within the UC Berkeley College of Letters & Science, and will be supported by Social Science Matrix.

Social Science Matrix is proud to announce our inaugural cohort of Matrix Communications Scholars, a group of six PhD students or candidates who will create podcasts, written interviews, or other features while developing social science communication skills throughout the year. The Scholars are Jennie Barker, a PhD candidate in Political Science; J.T. Jamieson, a PhD candidate in History; Aidan Lee, a PhD student in History; Daniel Lobo, a PhD student in Sociology; Nataliya Nedzhvetskaya, a PhD student in Sociology; and Tiffany Taylor, a PhD student in the Department of Anthropology.
